30 Day Challenge Day 21 – Color: Pretty & Polished Private School

For Day 21 of the 30 Day Challenge, I turned to my growing collection of indie nail polish for inspiration. Today’s theme is inspired by a color, so I took that to mean I should look for inspiration from a nail polish shade.

I recently picked up a mini of Pretty & Polished Private School. With the recent start of the school season and the feel of fall in the air, this one jumped out at me. It’s a sheer gray with silver and black glitter plus a subtle red shimmer. I hadn’t used it yet so that counts toward 30 Days of Untrieds, the other challenge I’m participating in simultaneously.

I started with one coat of Sinful Colors Slate, a medium gray with a silver frosty shimmer, just so I wouldn’t have to use as much of my precious indie polish. I then applied one coat of Pretty & Polished Private School on each nail except my ring finger, which got a second coat of Sinful Colors Slate. I topped that off with a coat of Poshe fast-dry top coat. Pretty & Polished Private School was as pretty on the nail as it was in the bottle. It went on very will, with little-to-no glitter placement needed. Pretty & Polished is available on Etsy.

Private school makes me think of school uniforms, so I created a plaid pattern on my ring finger, loosely based on this video tutorial from Cute Polish. I used Essie Very Cranberry (also untried), a berry-colored creme, to paint a wide stripe down the nail, then created a tic-tac-toe board pattern with Kiss Nail Art Paint Black striping polish. I used a Kiss White striper polish to create a cross pattern inside the black lines, and then Kiss Silver Glitter striper polish to add the last two lines of my plaid pattern.

Then on my index finger, I used a dotting tool and Essie Very Cranberry to add three small hearts, the kind you might find scribbled on the front of a notebook or the inside of a locker door. I added another layer of Poshe on top of the nail art.

Hope you liked my Private School-inspired manicure.

30 Day Challenge Day 17 – Glitter: Essie Set In Stones With OPI My Pointe Exactly

For the glitter theme of the 30 Day Challenge, I’m featuring a jelly sandwich. This has quickly become one of my favorite subtle-yet-flashy combinations.

The glitter is Essie Set In Stones, large, medium and small silver hex glitter in a clear base, which satisfies the 30 Days of Untrieds challenge I’m doing simultaneously.

I started with two coats of OPI My Pointe Exactly, a sheer grey. I followed that with one coat of Essie Set In Stones and then another coat of My Pointe Exactly. There’s one coat of Poshe quick dry top coat to finish it off.

Short and sweet, but pretty, don’t you think?

30 Day Challenge Day 13 – Animal Print: Zebra French Manicure

It’s Day 13 of the 30 Day Challenge and we’re on to animal prints.

They say there’s a first time for everything. Today, it’s my first time with animal print on my nails. I trolled around online for inspiration and saw several zebra french manicures. I liked the idea but added some color instead of just going for black and white.

For the french manicure I used Kiss Nail Art Paint White (untried) for the tips, and then two coats of OPI Care To Danse? (untried), a light sheer pink.

I then used Sinful Colors Nail Art Sour Grapes, a neon magenta striping polish, to create the stripes. I stuck to the tips for all of my nails except on my ring finger, where I painted the stripes on the whole nail. For a little something extra I added one coat of OPI Pirouette My Whistle, silver matte hex glitter with silver shimmer in a clear base. I finished with one coat of Poshe fast-dry top coat.

Not sure this is something I would ever have tried without this challenge, so I guess it’s good to expand my horizons!

30 Day Challenge Day 5: Blue – Sinful Colors Rain Storm With Rainbow Honey The Worst Possible Thing

I’ve got something a little simpler for Day 5 of the 30 Day Challenge after yesterday’s uber-challenging (for me) fishtail braid manicure, but that doesn’t mean I love this one any less. Day 5 means blue, and since I’m simultaneously doing 30 Days of Untrieds, so this post covers both challenges.

Sinful Colors Rain Storm with Rainbow Honey The Worst Possible Thing

This is one coat of Sinful Colors Rain Storm (untried) with one coat of Rainbow Honey The Worst Possible Thing (untried) on top, followed by one coat of Poshe fast dry top coat.

Sinful Colors Rain Storm with Rainbow Honey The Worst Possible Thing

Sinful Colors Rain Storm is a very pretty medium dusty blue. It’s a bit of a runner, meaning it goes on thick but really wants to move down the nail. But it was a one-coater for me, so I’m very happy with it.

Rainbow Honey’s The Worst Possible Thing is a glitter top coat with pink, purple, blue and iridescent glitter. It does dry pretty quickly so you need to move fast, but it has great coverage. Mine is a mini bottle, which I still found a little challenging to use, but it was definitely easier to apply than Rainbow Honey Mare Of The Moon. You can buy both at RainbowHoney.com.

Here’s what it looks like mattified with one coat of Essie Matte About You:

And here’s Sinful Colors Rain Storm on its own:

Guess I’m on a bit of a Sinful Colors kick. How about you? They are on sale for $0.99 at Walgreens through Sept. 8 if you want to stock up.

30 Day Challenge Day 1: Red – Savina Ruby and Hearts

Here we go! Today I’m embarking on my first-ever blog challenge, and actually not just one but two. I’m going for both the 30 Day Challenge and 30 Days of Untrieds, inspired by Rachel from Polished Criminails, who is doing the same.

Savina Ruby, Savina Hearts

Day 1’s theme is Red. Not only does this manicure include untried colors for me but also an untried brand, Savina, which is available at Nordstrom Rack. This mani includes:

  • Savina Ruby (untried)
  • Savina Hearts (untried)
  • NYC French White Tip (untried)

Savina Ruby, Savina Hearts, NYC French White Tip

Savina Ruby, Savina Hearts
For my nails I used two coats of Savina Ruby, followed by one coat of Poshe fast dry top coat. On the accent nails, I used three coats of NYC French White Tip, one coat of Savina Hearts and one coat of Poshe.

I didn’t think of myself as a fan of red nail polish, but I actually liked this one quite a bit once it was on. It’s more of a jelly polish with a red shimmer. It went on very smoothly and seemed to dry pretty quickly, though the finish was a little bit bumpy. Definitely needed the Poshe.

Savina Ruby, Hearts

White polish can often be tricky, and NYC French White Tip was no exception. First coat was extremely streaky, second mostly covered, third did the trick. I was a little disappointed with Savina Hearts. Since the bottle is jam-packed with heart-shaped glitter, I hoped it would go on with decent coverage. But that wasn’t the case for me. I had to fish out and place the glitter.

I tried dabbing; that didn’t work so well because I was just getting lots of the base with none of the hearts. In the end I grabbed a toothpick and used that to place them on the nail. It turned out a little messy.

Savina Hearts

Next time I will try to apply a coat of Savina Hearts that has no glitter at all, just so I can build up a good base of the iridescent shimmer first, and then fish out and place the hearts.

What do you think? Any tips and tricks for applying polishes with large glitter?

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner

In honor of today’s launch of the Aphrodite Lacquers Friday Night Glitter Bombs collection, here’s a look at one of Rebecca’s older polishes, RumRunner.

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner was actually the second-ever addition to my ever-growing collection of indie nail polishes, but for some reason I hadn’t swatched it yet.

RumRunner is part of Aphrodite’s The SandBar Collection, which celebrates summer-y cocktails. Genius!

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner

The polish is a berry-colored jelly with dark pink and silver glitter.

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner

RumRunner was a dream polish for me. It went on smooth with great application; the formula was perfect for me and it was easily removed, no staining. Plus not too many stray glitters left stranded on my skin, which is often a problem with glitter polish after removal.

This is a base coat of Gelous, two coats of RumRunner, another coat of Gelous and a coat of Poshe.

Aphrodite Lacquers RumRunner

RumRunner is currently available via the Aphrodite Lacquers shop on Etsy, along with the new Friday Night Glitter Bombs. And check out my weekly Restock Radar blog post for more indie polish launches coming this week.
